POSITION:  Operations Manager, Duke University

HIRING RANGE:   NEGOTIABLE

SUMMARY
Manage and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in the operation of animal care facilities in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.  


DUTIES

Responsible for the supervision of animal care staff.

Plan and schedule work assignments. Ensures that schedules are efficient, assignments are made promptly, and working time is utilized efficiently.

Assign duties to employees and monitors quantity and quality of work performed. Assigned duties are communicated verbally and in writing.

 Monitor work assignments daily, weekly, and for accordance with SOPs.

 Establish performance standards for animal care and facility sanitation according to animal welfare regulations and AAALAC accreditation guidelines.

Make recommendations to Director, Sr. Operations Manager and participate in leadership team meetings.

Monitor repairs, equipment, materials and supplies needed for facility operations such as cagewash systems, carts, wheel castors, light timers, automatic watering devices and the condition of the physical plant.

Inspect facility daily.

Assist senior operations manager in assigning animal housing space to achieve needs of research projects and the efficient use of facilities and manpower.

Issue appropriate corrective action including counseling and formal actions when needed, in accordance with Duke University work rules and, when applicable, the bargaining unit contract.

 Monitor attendance of employees in accordance with appropriate University/departmental policies and procedures. Report unscheduled absences daily to Department HR manager.

Conduct interviews and make hiring recommendations.

Facilitate the movement of animals coming to the university and the movement of animals within the medical center, and other facilities as needed.

Expand technical knowledge base to enhance effectiveness on the job.

Lead staff meetings, attend leadership team meetings.

Serve on various committees/projects as assigned.

Show initiative by making suggestions that lead to improved work process.

Identify opportunities to enhance customer service.

Take initiative to promote a safe work environment. Ensure that employees are following OESO and    department safety guidelines.

Demonstrate leadership by helping staff to achieve goals.

Ensure that commitments are met and problems resolved when out the office.

Consistently foster respect in the workplace.

Display excellent communication skills in listening and responding to others in all situations.

Communicate the need to train and support employees as the department changes.

Treat customers with dignity and respect.

Delegate challenging assignments to employees to support development.

Balance quality and cost effectiveness in making decisions.

Participate in AALAS Certification Registry and maintain “Registered” status at Laboratory Animal Technologist level.

Report to the Senior Operations Manager.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE Education/Training:  Work requires extensive knowledge of laboratory animal care and management principles generally acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology, Animal Science or related field.
